Using Wikipedia

Wikipedia can be a great starting point for your research. It’s purpose is to give users a quick look at any topic. It is great for:

  • Looking up unknown terminology
  • Background information

What is Wikipedia?

“Wikipedia is a multilingual, web-based, free-content encyclopedia project supported by the Wikimedia Foundation and based on a model of openly editable content. Wikipedia is the largest and most popular general reference work on the Internet, and is named as one of the most popular websites.” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia)

How do I use Wikipedia?

Wikipedia should NOT be quoted, cited, or used as a source for your paper or project. Instead, Wikipedia is great for users that need a quick introduction to a topic. Check out the bottom of the entry for credible sources. These usually link directly to the source and are often credible sources for your paper or project.
