The medical profession has long recognized that implementing a wellness program of preventive health care helps humans lead healthier, longer lives. Now the veterinary community has recognized the same benefits for our dogs. There's no question that our dogs provide us with unconditional love. They serve many roles: companions, service and therapy pets, members of the family. They help lower our blood pressure and keep us on an even keel. There's no doubt that keeping them healthy will help them live longer and happier lives, and the key to successful and cost-effective pet care is to protect pets against infectious diseases and other avoidable maladies before they occur.

This interim report assesses issues related to animal management, husbandry, health, and care at the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoological Park. The report finds that there are shortcomings in care and management that are threatening the well-being of the animal collection and identifies the'most pressing'issues that should be addressed.

This book synthesizes existing knowledge of the process of domestication and how it has affected the behavior of captive wild and domesticated animals. Three broad themes are addressed: genetic contributions to the process of domestication, experimental contributions to the process of domestication, the process of feralization (i.e. the adaptation of domesticated animals when returned to their natural habitat).

The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) Veterinary Departments have enabled an environment suitable to set an international benchmark on a project concept to enhance the welfare of racehorses, based on research using extensive and detailed data collection within an integrated framework. Retrospective analysis of data collected over the past several years has been made available. The approach outlined in this book has two broad objectives. The first is to investigate outcomes of interest using data which has already been collected. Outcomes of interest are likely to include (though not be limited to), variables that influence injury, retirement or performance. The second broad objective is to extend the approach to a more general assessment of the usefulness of different data types and different variables, and the assessment of data collection, collation, analysis and reporting methodology, as well as the development of intervention strategy. This book concludes with a philosophical view point on the veterinary management of thoroughbred racing injuries in which a think-out-of-the-box concept in assessing the risk of racehorse injuries is discussed. One outcome of this is an integrated technology approach for tracking horse performance, recently developed by Cambridge Design UK. The integrated technology (flight deck recorder concept) for monitoring trackwork and race performance of racehorses can allow a standardised review of detailed training data and biometric readings from direct measurements of individual horse, to assess the progress of performance and the effect of track conditions. The development of integrated performance tracking technology is mission critical for the worldwide racing industry to optimize horse welfare, safety and racing performance, as well as to enhance the integrity of racing.

The U.S. market for pet medications is growing, and is in a state of transition. Although many pet owners continue to purchase their pet medications directly from veterinarians, this traditional distribution model has been challenged by the entry and expansion of retail businesses (both online and brick-and-mortar) that sell pet medications, as well as changes in the business practices of pet medication manufacturers, distributors, veterinarians, and retailers. This book provides an overview of the pet medications industry then examines prescription portability (prescriptions that can be filled by someone other than a veterinarian). The book also looks at distribution practices and the topic of generics. Recommendations on potential policy choices are made and areas that could benefit from additional study are identified.

Q fever was first described in 1937 by Dr. Edward Holbrook Derrick among abattoir workers in Queensland (Australia). This worldwide zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Coxiella burnetii also affects several domestic and wild mammal species, birds and arthropods, which can serve as reservoirs. The transmission between or within populations mainly occurs via inhalation or ingestion of this bacterium, which is also classified as a category B bioterrorism agent. Consequently, the epidemiological triad (i.e., agent, host and environment) assumes a crucial significance for the scientific knowledge of C. burnetii to understand its dynamic circulation within animal and human ecosystems and its pathogenicity in different populations. All of these aspects are deeply discussed in the present book. Moreover, risk factors, spatial epidemiology, the impact of climate change, pathogenicity, diagnosis in animals and humans, diagnostic and typing methods, and immunity improvement against C. burnetii within hosts are also described. Other than scientific research, this book also reports evidence-based medicine attained by several expert researchers in biological sciences, medical doctors and veterinary physicians, and their vision regarding Q fever trends and challenges. A significant amount of comprehensive information based on the One Health approach is shared with the readers. This book addresses the continued lack of the diversity in veterinary medicine, the least inclusive of all medical professions. Effective navigation of the complexity of diversity and inclusion in veterinary medicine requires clear enumeration, recognition, and understanding of key issues, challenges, and opportunities. In a nation with rapidly changing demographics, public needs and expectations of the veterinary profession will continue to evolve. A more diverse scientific workforce is required to feed the veterinary profession, not just for the purposed of equity, but as necessity for its sustainability and relevance.The book lays out the history of diversity in the veterinary profession, in the context of historical changes and actions within US society. The U.S. veterinary medical profession contributes to society in diverse ways, from developing drugs and protecting the food supply to treating companion animals and investigating animal diseases in the wild. In a study of the issues related to the veterinary medical workforce, including demographics, workforce supply, trends affecting job availability, and capacity of the educational system to fill future demands, a National Research Council committee found that the profession faces important challenges in maintaining the economic sustainability of veterinary practice and education, building its scholarly foundations, and evolving veterinary service to meet changing societal needs. Many concerns about the profession came into focus following the outbreak of West Nile fever in 1999, and the subsequent outbreaks of SARS, monkeypox, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, highly pathogenic avian influenza, H1N1 influenza, and a variety of food safety and environmental issues heightened public concerns. They also raised further questions about the directions of veterinary medicine and the capacity of public health service the profession provides both in the United States and abroad. To address some of the problems facing the veterinary profession, greater public and private support for education and research in veterinary medicine is needed. The public, policymakers, and even medical professionals are frequently unaware of how veterinary medicine fundamentally supports both animal and human health and well-being. This report seeks to broaden the public's understanding and attempts to anticipate some of the needs and measures that are essential for the profession to fulfill given its changing roles in the 21st century.

One of the largest volunteer movements in the twentieth century, local farm and home bureau organizations have been woefully underrepresented in socio-political studies of the American Farm Bureau Federation. Nancy K. Berlage addresses this omission with an insightful look at how bureau members put university science to work in agricultural and rural life at the local level, even while industrialization, and urbanization profoundly shifted the landscape of labor in the U.S. In Farmers Helping Farmers, Berlage explores how bureaus served as the locus of science-based agriculture for rural communities. Drawing on community bonds and culturally powerful metaphors to overcome skepticism, bureaus played a critical role in circulating knowledge grounded in the new disciplines of agricultural economics, rural sociology, home economics, veterinary medicine, child science, and public health. One bitterly cold winter afternoon, a nine-month-old colt--extremely weak, starving, left to die--was frozen to the rock-hard white landscape of a northern Wisconsin pasture.
